Oxidation occurs when the oil reacts with oxygen over time, often as a result of high operating temperature and long usage time. It leads to higher viscosity, acid formation and loss of lubricity.
We measure the level of oxidation with FTIR, in which absorption of infrared light reveals specific oxidation products.
The result gives an indication of whether the oil still has good properties, or if it has begun to break down and should be replaced. Trend analysis over time provides even better insight.
