Calorific value (energy content) measures how much heat energy is released by the combustion of a sample -- important for fuels, biofuels and alternative energy carriers.

The sample is burned in a calorimeter, and the heat released is recorded in MJ/kg or kWh/kg.

The result provides the customer with a measure of fuel efficiency and economy, and is used for comparison between different energy sources or for product quality control.
